Audio Tones

The BWS EAS uses the US SAME (Specific Area Message Encoding) standard adapted for the UK. The sequence is: SAME header (FSK 1562.5/2083.3 Hz), 8-second attention signal (853+960 Hz dual tone), voice message, and End of Message burst.

SAME Code Format

Format: ZCZC-BWS-EVT-AREACODE+TTTT-JJJHHMM-OFFICEID- followed by NNNN (end of message). Multiple areas are separated by hyphens. Duration is HHMM. Issue time is Julian day + HHMM UTC.

Alert Levels

BWS warnings follow the UK traffic-light system: Red (Danger to life), Amber (Significant disruption), Yellow (Possible disruption). EAS Extreme/Severe correspond to Red/Amber, and Moderate/Minor correspond to Yellow.
